#SPONSORMYEDUCATION - Teacher Bayan's Story

“Hello / Assalam Alaikum,

My name is Bayan, I am from Syria, and in 2016 I arrived in Greece with my family. When the war started, my life turned upside down. For four years we moved from one place to another in Syria, escaping from the bombing by the military and ISIS. After a terrifying escape we managed to reach Turkey, then we continued on to Europe through the Aegean sea: to Chios island, then to Athens, and finally to Thessaloniki.

Currently, I am a refugee in Greece; we managed to find stability here.

In 2018, I started volunteering at the ‘Union of Hellenic-Arabic Friendship’ School as an Arabic teacher. I love teaching children; that's why I decided to finish my studies, and in 2004 I got a Bachelor's degree in Primary teaching. I am so happy to contribute and help the refugee and asylum seeker children with UHAF.”

- Bayan, 2021.

Bayan is one of twelve incredible refugee teachers dedicating their time to teaching young refugees at the UHAF school in Thessaloniki. The school provides vital support and education to vulnerable refugee kids, helping them feel safe and positive in a new environment, and giving them a sense of belonging and hope for the future.

Being refugees, the teachers at UHAF can offer students a unique sense of kinship and empathy. Sadly, due to insufficient funding, the kids have lost several of their favourite teachers. We believe it is vital for their #mentalhealth and wellbeing that they have a consistent source of love, support and at least one stable environment in their lives.

We’ve teamed up with UHAF this #Ramadan to help give #refugee kids a brighter future and support the inspiring teachers who make this possible. Here’s how you can help:

£5 School supplies, eg pencil case & notebook for a term

£18 Sponsor a child’s education for a month

£108 Sponsor a child’s education for 6 months

£215 Sponsor a child’s education for a year

£258 secure one month’s salary for a refugee teacher
