#SponsorMyEducation: Haneen's Story

“My name is Haneen, I am 18 years old and I’m from Syria. I came to Greece in 2016. When I arrived in Thessaloniki I was 14 years old, and I didn’t know Greek so I couldn’t communicate with anyone except my family. In 2017, we heard about the Union of Hellenic-Arabic Friendship, which teaches languages and the Qur’an.

I started attending the lessons, making friends with children from Syria and other Arabic countries. The Arabic lessons helped us hold on to our mother tongue, and Greek lessons were valuable and helpful as we were beginners. I’ve also now memorized 7 chapters of the Qur’an! I’ve had a wonderful time in this school.”

This Ramadan, we are proud to be teaming up with UHAF school to support the education of young refugees in Thessaloniki. As well as providing a stepping stone towards a brighter future, the school gives students a sense of belonging and purpose, and helps integrate them into a new society. This is absolutely invaluable for their mental health and long-term wellbeing.
